Hi John,

The 3500XL is purely a layer 2 switch and won't support ACL.

Hi leolaohoo,

Thanks for the reply. But how come I can issues access-list commands in the switch?

Hope you point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

John

The command is there because of catOS, but the hardware does not support it

3500 XL is only a layer-2 switch and does not have a layer-3

functionality. That implies that 3500 XL switches do not support the configuring of ACLs.

The only option is to suppress or control mac-addresses on ports is called Port Security.

Basically with this feature you will allow or restrict certain

mac-addresses or a maximum amount on a per-port-basis.

Here is the config guide for port-security:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2900xl_3500xl/release12.0_5_wc3/swg/Swgports.html

3550 switches, do support ACL :

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3550/software/release/12.1_4_ea1/configuration/guide/Swacl.html

Thanks for you replies guys. It help me understand my concern.

Regards,

John
