Paging Integration - FXS or FXO

mlitka

Level 2

We currently have Bogen and Valcom paging amplifiers connected to our Nortel Option 11. We would like to move this paging gear over to a Cisco 2811 Gateway/CUCM 4.1(3). How do I determine what type of VWIC is required in the gateway to support this configuration?

Hey Michael,

Hahaha!! I wish I was a Cisco madman :)

OK, this final result does tell us what we need to know. That the current setup is actually using a Trunk or FXO style port. This means that the you can use either an FXS or FXO on the Cisco side as long as you order up the TAMB mid-point integration piece (very cheap $$). You should be good to go.

Cheers!

The best way would be documentation or determining what the old configuration was.

Barring that - if it is FXS you should be able to plug an analog phone into it and get dial tone.

Outside of finding some more information out, that would be the only test. If you already have a VIC2-2FXS you can try configuring it and seeing if that works.

Hi Michael,

Just to add a note to the great tips from NIck (+5 points here Nick:)

If you can;

Access the Nortel

Go into Load 20

Prt

PAG

The output may look like this;

REQ: PRT

TYPE: PAG

TN

CUST 0

DATE

PAGE

DES

TN x.x.x.x

TYPE PAG

CUST 0

RTMB 1 1

SIGL EAM

If it is set for E&M we will then know.

But more than likely it will look something like this;

In this case where a Nortel Paging card is being replaced, you will need some "mid-span" type device. In the Nortel setup with the XUT set for Paging, when someone dialed DN xxxx the Paging Card would answer and just "Bridge" the Audio over to the Amp. All the Smarts so to speak are in the Nortel Paging Card (Ring detection, Audio Cut-through etc) so the equivalent is to use this Part with an FXS Port. This TAM-B is required in 99% of the cases I have seen.

Something like this;

Hope this helps!

Rob / Nick -

Thanks for the great direction here.

I tried your Nortel commands and got the following:

>LD 20

PT0000

REQ: PRT

TYPE: PAG

REQ:

Any ideas?

What's the exact Valcom / Bogen models? Fairly sure that you could find that type of information on a datasheet from the vendor.

This is one of them:

http://www.camelectronics.com/botptepaam3m2.html

Not sure on the Valcom's, but the connect through the same jumpered pair.

Here are the TAMB docs I got.

Hi Michael,

The output from the Nortel is a "good" thing. This means that the input from the Option 11 was likely a 500/FXS type port and not an actual Paging trunk. You can see on page 3 of the manual in the link you sent, where the phone line is currently connected to the Bogen. Just to be sure you might want to trace the wiring back through the cross-connects to the Nortel TN to verify the port type. I'm pretty sure in this case you won't actually require any additional equipment to fire this up :)

If you know the DN of the Paging access you could also use;

LD 11

PRT

DNB

DN - xxxx

to see exactly what Port/type was being used.

Cheers!

So the Nortel side is an FXO style port and it sounds like this is the way to go from other posts.

Thanks for all your help!!
