Solved: ICMP

Hi every body.

I have few questions about how to view icmp messages on windows xp host.

Let say host 1 is windows xp host, connected to router R which is connected to server , S

h1------R-(network)- --Server

Let say router has no route for the network, server is located on. So when i try to open the browser on h1 and type server's dns name, say http://www.S.com which is successfully resolved by R into ip address of server. But i am not able to access server as router has no route for server network. Router will send Icmp unreacable message to host1. How can i view this message on h1 ?

Sarah,

On the XP host, you would just get a request timed out. I don't think there's a way to get the default "ping" utility on Windows to give you a more meaningful message.

I may be wrong, and I may learn something with the above response :)

You can load a network protocol analyzer.

Wireshark is free and very robust http://www.wireshark.com

Nothing on XP. You'd have to use something that can view the raw protocol messages like Wireshark that Edison suggested.

You would run that, capture traffic on your ethernet interface, start your ping, and then view the results in Wireshark. That's really the only way to see what you're wanting to on any operating system that I know of. (I don't even think Linux does it natively without tcpdump.)

Thanks John and Edison.

Keep in mind, we are not using ping utility. My intention is to view icmp messages. For example on cisco router, i can use debug ip icmp, and i can view icmp messages asthey are sent and received .

But we don't have any command to view such messages on windows xp host. In my case, router will send icmp unreachable message to xp host. But there is no way for me at the windows xp host, to know icmp unreacable message is received.

Edison suggested wireshark which is valuable tool, but there is no such command available to view those icmp messages on windows xp host.

Is it correct to assume?
