Another Lab Equip Question

Unanswered Question
Aug 23rd, 2009

i currently have:

2610 Frame switch

2x 3640's

2x 2950's

Studying for CCNP then possibly CCIE R&S; can i get away with 1x 3550 and 1x 3560( if the price is right) for now or will i miss out on some of switching labs?

And shoud i go with 2611xm's for aditional routers vs more 3640's?

i have some $$ to spend but can't break the bank.

I have this problem too.

My recommendation - buy what you need for the CCNP for now. The CCIE requirements might (and most likely will) change between now and when you are ready to take the lab exam.

If you can afford it, I think 1x 3550 and 1x3560 would be good additions to your lab. That would probably suffice for what you need in the switching exam.

On the 2611xm vs. 3640s, I prefer the 3640s only because of the additional slots and flexibility of those routers. Either of those will probably get you through the CCNP however.

Again - don't worry about buying for the CCIE. You will probably need to supplement or replace equipment anyway by the time you get there.

My other question is should i be buying wic-1T cards for each or if i opt for the 3640's can i use NM-4A/S modules?

Are the configs in the lab workbooks that different for these serial interfaces?

I did exactly that (bought NM-4A/S) for my 3600s. It worked out very well. You won't line up 100% with the lab books because the interface names will be different, but the nice thing is that you will be able to configure nearly any lab scenario!

Good luck,

So, if i use my 2610 w/ NM-4A/S module as a frame sw, my 3640's have NM's but what if i buy 2 - 2611xm's? would i need more NM's or do i buy the WIC-1T's ? i guess my question is do they work together?
