It doesn't seem to be working. I tried access vlan as well as trunking config on the 2900XL switch port to a 7960 phone PC port.

Try disabling spanning tree.

Should work. But why don't you connect it upstream of the phone then.
08-24-2009 02:25 PM
It's a temporary switch and I don't want to mess around the phone upstream connection. Also I can power on/off the 2900 switch without affecting the phone. What should I configure the switch port to 7960 pc port? I've tried both access and trunk mode.

Access. Check, it may get blocked by bpduguard or other security feature.
08-24-2009 02:44 PM
Access doesn't work. Switch is getting the bpdu packet from the phone pc port.
!
interface FastEthernet0/1
switchport access vlan 231
end
00:02:03: %SPANTREE-2-RECV_1Q_NON_TRUNK: Received 802.1Q BPDU on non trunk FastEthernet0/1 on vlan 231.
00:02:03: %SPANTREE-2-BLOCK_PORT_TYPE: Blocking FastEthernet0/1 on vlan 231. Inconsistent port type.
Changed to trunk port still doesn't help. Switch thinks it's the root for both VLANs.

interface FastEthernet0/1
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk

Try disabling spanning tree.

That takes care of the issue. Thanks for the tip!
