Are the Cisco 521S phones problematic?

Unanswered Question
Aug 26th, 2009

I am implementing a solution with the UC520 24 users with Cisco 7931 Receptionist phones and Cisco 521SG phones.  I am facing several issues, and my customer is not impressed so far.

Issue 1:

No matter what I do, I simply cannot get the switchport on the phone to activate. The ethernet port on my laptop does not see any activity when I connect the cable to it.  The phone is labelled 521S, on the box it says 521SG and the customer is expecting an extra switchport at every desk.  On the UC 520, it picks up some as 521G and some as 524G!!!!!!   wtf.

Issue 2:

After connecting all the phones to the 2960 PoE switch that I have, I see that the PoE negotiates correctly, and picks up the correct phone, in this case IP Phone CP-521S.   After a while, it drops a whole bunch of them to Ieee PD.  The phones still work, but I can no longer see these devices as CDP neighbors.

Also, on one occassion, all phones were switch ofd, except the 7931 Receptionist phone which connects to the same Ethernet switch.

I was told by the dealer to update the IOS and the phone load for that phone to the latest version, which I did, but still no luck.

Customer was also given a Polywell/Trixbox solution as well, but decided to go with Cisco to avoid the problems that I am presenting them with.

Can you post your config?  Remember to remove passwords before you post.

David Trad Wed, 08/26/2009 - 18:02

Hi Stuv,

If you are willing to try this upgrade path, have a look at this release:

https://upload.cisco.com/cgi-bin/swc/fileexg/main.cgi/UC520-7.1.1a-ea.zip?menu=download&file=124133.bin&encrypted_flag=0&file_name=FileExg/24142/124133.bin/UC520-7.1.1a-ea.zip&CONTYPES=UC500&sub_forum=UC500%20Software%20Pack%20Early%20Adopter

It is an Early Adopter release which means it might contain some bugs in it.

If you used CCA to upgrade the phone loads then it should work as required and the TFTP and Telephony-service sections should have been upgraded.

Lets see your config as that might also give away some information relating to your problem as well.

Just make sure you do remove any sensative information of that system you would not want release to public viewing.

Cheers,

David.

Hi there

I have upgraded the 2960 as well to the latest IOS available

I have uploaded the phone loads, (I tried several times to do it via CCA but could not find the correct way to do it).  I uploaded it with TFTP.

archive tar /xtract tftp://192.168.123.123/CME-Phone-Loads-7.0.3.tar flash:

I rebooted the router, the switch and the phones and it still shows the old phone-loads.

Hi Stuv,

I rebooted the router, the switch and the phones and it still shows the old phone-loads.

OK i have had a look at your config, nothing jumped out at me so i couldnt see anything wrong, your TFTP-SERVER looked ok so did your telephony-service as well.

I would try to factory reset the phones now, you should be able to do this via the menu of the phone, once you do that unplug it and then let it load back up again.

Can you also run the following on the command line please:

ROUTER# debug tftp events

ROUTER# term mon

The above command should be able to show us if the phone is seeking the right phone loads, if it is not it will show up some errors, if you can the messages that come up on the screen would be much appreciated if you can send them to us or post it on here.

Cheers,

David.

This looks to me like the tftp-server config entry for the 52x phone load is missing.  Did you update the software on the UC500 using CCA or by hand?  Can you attach the output of 'show runn | i tftp' to the discussion?

Cheers,

Dave.

tftp-server flash:phones/521_524/cp524g-8-1-16b.bin

David Harper Fri, 08/28/2009 - 02:20

Try configuring 'tftp-server flash:phones/521_524/cp524g-8-1-16b.bin alias cp524g-8-1-16b.bin'.  The alias is necessary because the phone does not know anything about the directory structure on the flash card, so is not asking for phones/521_524/cp524g-8-1-16b.bin.

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi,Use CCA 2.1 Phone Load manager to add phone load support to your system.  You only have to point it to the bundle zip you are running and it does an analysis of the phone loads and presents the ones to you that arent on your system yet and creates all the configuration for you.  No CLI.  Easies way.

Phone loads need to be 8.1.16(b)

sh ephone phone-load

will show you this.

Also you need to set an alias because tftp-server cannot go into tree on flash

tftp-server flash:phones/521_524/cp524g-8-1-16b.bin alias cp524g-8-1-16b.bin

good luck and happy hunting

Hi Stuv,

I am sorry you are having these many issues. The problem with the disabled switch port we have seen before, You need to ensure that you are using the latest PHONE LOAD as well, not just the latest IOS. What are your current phone load and IOS versions?

The latest bundle can be found on:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-9829

This contains all the latest phone loads. You can use CCA 2.0.1 to easily upgrade the system:

https://www.myciscocommunity.com/docs/DOC-7157

Also, on your 2960, please make sure that your voice and data VLANs are 100 and 1 respectively. CCA will not recognize the Catalyst 2900 as supported, so you will have to resort to CLI to configure it (which obviously you have already done).

Let us know,

Marcos
