License differences?

All,

We're configuring new routers and noticed that the IPBase version that we're running doesn't support NTP. We need the K9 version of IPBase. Can we "legally" download it since it's in the same family?

Thanks,

John

On routers, k9 is an updated image - more $$. On switches, the migration is free.

You might try sntp instead:

sntp server HOST

SNTP should be supported in this image.

I read the internal bug enclosure and the problem is with the online help but the command will take if entered without the help.

R1(config)#ntp server ?

vrf VPN Routing/Forwarding Information

R1(config)#ntp server 1.1.1.1

R1(config)#end

R1#sh run | i

*Aug 31 21:33:31.367: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console ntp

ntp server 1.1.1.1

R1#

R1#sh ver | i IOS

Cisco IOS Software, 7200 Software (C7200-IPBASE-M), Version 12.4(15)T9

Thanks for highlighting the bug.

Edison,

Thanks! I guess we're limited to local clock on these. :)

Can you expand on the feature you are after?

You can't sync to external sources without a k9 feature set?

That was it. I need to be able to sync this router to my main router that's syncing from an external time source. I don't have the option to set a server, only vrf.

Can you provide the show version of that router along with the output from typing ntp ? in the config mode?

Edison,

The version is:

12.4(15)T9 (c2800nm-ipbase-mz.124-15.T9.bin)

The options that I have are:

access-group

authenticate

authentication-key

broadcastdelay

clock-period

logging

master

max-associations

peer

server

source

trusted-key

update-calendar

Under ntp server ?:

vrf

And looking at the Feature navigator, it shows k9 after all of the images in order to support ntp.

Thanks,

John

Joe,

That looks like that might work. I'll put it in place when the branch receives it, and we'll see if it syncs.

Thanks!!

John,

(config)#ntp server ?

Hostname or A.B.C.D IP address of peer

vrf VPN Routing/Forwarding Information

sh ver | i flash:

System image file is "flash:c2800nm-ipbase-mz.124-15.T4.bin"

I don't have T9 anywhere at the moment but I'm sure this behavior has not changed from T4 to T9 :)

Actually, it has. This is broken according to CSCsz46378. It is working in earlier releases, and in 12.4(20)T (ipbase). It is not clear if this bug will be fixed in 12.4(15)T.

I should also point out, that the problem is only with the help. You could easily just do:

ntp server 10.1.1.1

And the parser should take it. The '?' will not work, though.

I read the internal bug enclosure and the problem is with the online help but the command will take if entered without the help.

R1(config)#ntp server ?

vrf VPN Routing/Forwarding Information

R1(config)#ntp server 1.1.1.1

R1(config)#end

R1#sh run | i

*Aug 31 21:33:31.367: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console ntp

ntp server 1.1.1.1

Edison,

Thanks for this. I did do this, and it shows the ntp config in the running configuration. When we put these routers in production, it will be interesting seeing if it really works.

Thanks!!

John,

It will work. I tested last night. Don't be afraid of the missing option from the online help.

It will be interesting to see what routers these are. I do remember (from a while back) that some low end routers (and low end feature sets) did not include support for NTP (trying to minimize the memory requirement).

I tried to use the Feature Navigator to check on this. But the only thing that Feature Navigator seems to show is whether there is support for NTPv4 but nothing to show whether basic NTP is supported or not.

I agree with the question that Edison asked about why John thinks that he needs the K9. If IP Base does not have NTP support then I wonder if just adding K9 will also get NTP. I wonder if it will be necessary to go up a feature set, to something like Advanced Security or Enterprise Services to get support for NTP.
