Cisco 6503E

I'm planning to implement a new L3 for my datacenter using 6503E model and not familiar with the hardware specification.

Could some one let me know how many slot are on the cassis please, thinking of put FWSM, CSW, IDSM-2, VPN Module and MSFC2 to the cassis.

Accroding from the Cisco website the VPN appliance is no longer being sold and not be supported, what is a replace model?

Thanks

ps: planning to implement the L3 similar to the Topology B of Figure 2-3 at this doc http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Data_Center/ServerFarmSec_2.1/2_Topolo.html

6503E has 3 slots. 65xx -> xx = the number of slots so

6503 = 3

6506 = 6

6509 = 9

6513 = 13

For VPN you need one of these -

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps6267/7600S_6500S_IPSec_VPN_SPA_DS_ps8768_Products_Data_Sheet.html

Note that the 6509-E is probably what you want although you may get away with a 6506-E chassis. The chassis is not really the expensive part of the 6500 so best to allow for some future growth. Don't go 6513 though unless you really need to though as their are module limitations with this chassis.

Edit - by the way there are a lot of options for the 6500 so start here with the 6500 documentation and come back if you have further questions -

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the quick response which help with most of my question.

Do you know a link for all line card that compatible with the 6509E model?, basically I'm looking for an add-on 10/100/1000 Ethernet card to increase number of port on the cassis?.

I have checked this site but no luck,http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps2706/prod_module_series_home.html

Thanks

Start here -

One thing to note. WS-67xx line cards only work with a supervisor 720 so if you are think of purchasing a sup32 then don't bother with those cards.

You do have to be careful when selecting kit for the 6500 because the sup32 and sup720 offer vastly different capabilities in terms of switch fabric capacity.

Hopefully you are looking at sup720's as this is a DC setup.

Jon

Thanks!!

Could someone correct me if I'm wrong, in order to take advantange of the FWSM, the hardware, software and virtual firewall (optional) are basic requirements?

I'm looking at the sup720 (integrated PFC and MSFC) and it look good, when selecting the FWSM, there are two options, the hardware only and the Security Bundles (WS-C6509-E-FWM-K9 and WS-6509EXL-2FWM-K9).

What this means by "Enhanced Chassis, Supervisor 720 3Bxx" is this means I don't have to get the sup720 and only sup2 or 32 is only enough?

Thanks

Sup2 is already end-of-sale.

FWSM works with a Sup720 (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

When you get the "bundle", you get the chassis (6, 9, 13 slot), corresponding fan tray, Sup 720-3BXL and of course the FWSM. Be aware, the power supply is not included.

do you know what software release that come with the "bundle"? or this have to purchase separatly?

Good question!

For starters, the Sup will come with an IP Base firmware. Note that I didn't say CatOS or IOS (monolithic or modular). You'll have to specify what you want in the purchase order. By default, they'll send you the CatOS.

You can purchase the higher firmware services but I'm not sure whether Cisco will load this up for you or not.

Hope this helps.
