Dual MSFC3 IOS Upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade IOS in Dual MSFC3 routing cards, currently I'm running IOS Version 12.2(17a)SX1 (quite old) and cisco sent me a document outlining step by step what to do. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080a98f3c.shtml#Hybrid

I'm only trying to upgrade IOS not CatOS, but in that document there were a lot of redundancy commands that I think the IOS version I have doesn't have.

I already tried upgrading the MSFC3, with no success, I want to move to version 12.2(18)SXF16 per cisco recommendation. but It'll be really nice if someone had the correct document to do the upgrade for Dual supervisors would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Daniel,

if your system is in hybrid mode and you want to upgrade ios image of MSFC3 only you should follow this link

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00801347e2.shtml

or

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00801347e2.shtml

However, the document describes how to do this with MSFC2.

So you need to look also at the document provided by TAC from step 6

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080a98f3c.shtml#Hybrid

the previous sections are used to disable some checks on versions and they can be helpful.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hey, thanks for the links, I read thru them, the last one is the one that cisco sent me, but I'm not sure which step 6 you are referring too.

Last time I tried to upgrade I copy the image to bootflash and slavebootflash, then I rebooted the standby supervisor and that's when it never came back, when I plugged that module into another switch to make it primary the config register was wrong, so as soon as I changed it back, it booted fine, (not really sure what happened with the config register).

So after uploading the image to bootflash and slavebootflash, change the boot parameter and writting the config, should I reload both supervisors at the same time? or only the standby and then the primary?

Hello Daniel,

my understanding of your original post is that you want to upgrade the IOS image of MSFCs in a chassis running in hybrid mode.

Your second post make me think that you have a Native IOS chassis with two supervisors.

Reloading an MSFC in hybrid mode and the whole supervisor are two different things.

May you post a sh module to let us know the state of the chassis?

Hope to help

Giuseppe

sure, here it is. I'm pretty sure it's running in hybrid mode, but it's the first time I upgrade an IOS in hybrid mode so I'm still confused. (I removed the serial stuff in the sh module)
