I have multicast source connected to an edge router - sending Multicast. I then turn off that source and start up another source sending the same Multicast group on teh same VLAN. the selectover happens within 20 seconds. Does that require the DR to re-register to the RP again becuase of the new source? Won't the S,G States already be there and so it won't have to be re-register?

Hello J,

>> Does that require the DR to re-register to the RP again becuase of the new source?

yes I do think so

>> Won't the S,G States already be there and so it won't have to be re-register?

the (S1,G) state had been built not the new (S2,G) state.

this is seen as a distinct pair even if the new SPT tree will be identical to that of the other source.

An optimization for the case of multiple sources is given with PIM bidirectional.

SPT switchover has a default threshold of one packet just to give to the signalling plane the time to setup the SPT for new pair (S2,G)

Hope to help

Giuseppe

ok thanks that's very helpful. I forgot S,G states are source specific.
