Replaying VOD within Live Stream

All, I need to periodically play a prerecorded video with a live stream (TV News channel) playing before and after. Anyone ever done this? We have DMS, and ACNS appliances (no TV out).

Hey david-webb,

Which components of the DMS do you have?

Have you considered streaming this vod through a streaming server?

We have DME2000's.

Have you tried a Windows WVX file ? Point your browser to this file, and Windows will play the playlist in sequence:

http://xxxx/livestream.asx">

I am not sure if Windows will continue to the last entry when the "live" stream suddenly ends, but if you know the length of the live stream before, you can put it also in the file (google for exact syntax). Windows will then play the livestream for an exact amount of time

Switch the recorded video into the live stream using a video switcher. That is how it is done in a TV studio and in any webcast. Don't try to build a playlist on the streaming server. To complicated and problematic. Keep it simple. If you choose the right pro video gear all these roll ins can be automated.

Can a VOD be scheduled/played from a DME?

You cannot schedule a video file to play from within the encoder. You cannot force play a video or setup a play list that auto plays through the video portal moving from a live video stream to a VOD stream.

To do this through the DMS will require a substantial investment on the data center side. You will need to purchase elements of the Cisco (Scientific Atlanta) Content Delivery Manager (CDM)system which will integrate files seemlessly prior to the multicast of the stream. This system is used for Ad insertions in Broadcast/IPTV installations. Doable but not cost effective for nothing but the largest corporate installs.

The easiest and least expensive thing to do is to switch the video and do a B-Roll video insertion prior to encode.
