HSRP timers msec value

Dear All,

clarify the below doubt.

I have configured the hsrp configuration in the SVI,s on 6500 switch.

1)standby timers msec 15 msec 50 configured on both Active and standby router?

2)if we applied this standby timer msec in vlan any downtime is neccessary?

config example:-

Hello Subash,

1) yes on both devices

2) no downtime should happen but HSRP can change during configuration

I would recommend to use an authentication password too.

These timers are quite aggressive and the effects can be visible only if you are using any Rapid STP form.

With standard STP 802.1D convergence time is in the order of up to 50 seconds.

So you should use Rapid PVST or MST in your network.

Thanks for the reply.

We ar using MST.

today we applied this command ,in logs the hsrp state change is happened.so we revert back.

I tried in the dynamips router with this same value . but in the standby router i am getting HSRP state change error like flapping. after then i increased the timers msec value , ididn,t got any error message .

Hello Subash,

using higher values is probably reasonable those values are simply too low.

By the way, MST using 802.1W instances should converge in 100 ms (or more) so a reasonable value for HSRP could be 250 ms and 750 msec for hold time.
