Cisco have new switches , specifically 2960 with both IOS options .

Can anyone explain to me when and where can we deploy a switch with Light weight image instead of Lan base image ?

I am actually reluctant to position a light weight cause even Cisco SEs dont recommend this version .

Please advice

Thank you

Hello.

I think this presentation should be able to explain things:

Simon,

That prezo is about 8- and 12-port switches.

However, I strongly believe that the question is in regard to the LAN Lite image for Cat2960 as opposed to LAN Base image.

If that assumption is correct, the argument from Cisco is something like "Use LAN Lite if you are in a tight competition with e.g. ProCurve, but go with LAN Base if at all possible".

I saw a prezo once with I believe 4 pages of PPT outlining the differences between the two image types. One thing being lot less QoS features in LAN Lite than LAN Base and for many other features it will be the same.

Moreover, if you buy a Cat2960 with LAN Lite and find out afterwards, that you actually needed LAN Base, then your only upgrade option is to buy a new switch - there's NO software upgrade option.

HTH.

Thanks Simon for the presentation but my question is more relative to Iyde s point .

Cisco always tel us whenever you have a competition propose light Image otherwise never propose Light and instead put Lan Base .

This is quite confusing and bothering , cause they never give you a comitment or why not to always propose light weight image .

I honestly am specialised in Hospitality sector which faces fierce competition with cheaper vendors such as Nortel previously , Alcatel , and now very strongly a consortium between HP and AVAYA .

Looking at Cisco Prices we can never compete with their prices unless we strip ourselves and get Highest discounts .

This said , i can never get a clear GO and commitment from Cisco on using the light Image switches and i personally have no experience with Light image or references in order for me to be confident in proposing that kind of switches in a Hotel .

I would appreciate if someone can explain to me what features will i be missing and whether it is risky to deploy them in such an enviroment .

Thank you guys for your help but i believe many people suffer from this
