Point to point +VPN=Overkill?

Hello Everyone,

Is there ever any justification for encrypting the traffic flowing over a point to point connection provided by an ISP? One school of thought has the traffic already private but on the other hand it is on a service providers network and if that network gets compromised then the data on that private ciruit could be compromised as well.

Thanks in advance!

Our security policies requires that we encrypt traffic that flows over a 3rd party carrier. Since we work with the government it's not overkill for us. You'll need to weigh the risks for compromised data versus the cost of encryption.
