Solved: Migrating CCM 4.1.3 and Unity 4.0.3 to UCM 7.x and Unity Connection 7.x

Hello all,

I am looking into migrating my CCM 4.1.3 and Unity 4.0.3 environment to UCM 7.x and Unity Connection 7.x I am looking to do one component at the time but not sure which one I should do first.

some questions that I have in front of me right now. Hope someone can help clearify.

If I upgrade CCM 4.1.3 first. Will UCM 7.x compatible with Unity 4.0.3 and vice versa ?

Unity is currently running on an MCS-7835 server. Is it possible to run Unity Connection 7.x on this server ? I am think of re-using this server for the Unity upgrade.

Has anyone gone through this migration with the same version ? I appreciate any inputs/suggestions !!!

Danny,

You need to decide exactly what versions of ICM you want to migrate to as there are only certain versions of UCM that will work with certain ICM versions. A key issue is that ICM 7.2 is the last version of ICM to work with CM4.1.3, so unless you plan to upgrade all components in one go (typically a weekend) then you have to stage the upgrade in steps.

You could upgrade to CM 4.2 and then upgrade ICM to 7.5, then follow on with an CUCM upgrade to 7.1(x) after that. You'll have some AD work to do on route as well, plus the option to upgrade to Windows 2008 when you hit ICM 7.5(5) upwards.

Unity interoperates with all CUCM versions so you can push that one aside for now.

Here's the compatibility matrix I drew up for personal reference, double check anything before you swear by it!

Also, given your hardware may well be quite old a tech refresh offers some benefits here as you can build your traget platform standalone and largely test it before cutting over.

Upgrading all these components is not a trivial activity! I'm currently involved in two projects for customers going through pretty much all the same component upgrades as you and it's taking a lot of very careful planning,

TFTP files like SEPMAC.cnf.xml and other Cisco generated files will be recreated when the data is imported, any custom stuff (backgrounds, ringtones, etc) you need to manually upload and configure again.

Since DHCP was a Windows service on 4.X versions, nothing is migrated with DMA, you'll need to configure DHCP directly on CUCM again.

If you upgrade Unity to the latest TSP you can support any CUCM version.

Hi Java,

I also have IPCC 6.0 and IPIVR 3.5.4 in the environment and also looking into upgrading to 7.x

Do I upgrade IPCC first or CCM ?

Hi,

You have to upgrade first the callmanager and after the UCCX.

During the UCCX Installation, it ask you the Callmanager information (IP, username, password ...) so if it's not yet installed, you cannot go further

Hi Jed,

Thank you and I appreciate your thorough response !!! I agree it takes lots research and planning for a successful migration and that's what I've been doing. Most likely I will have replace some of the existing hardware. One of my concerns is that I have a 6509 with a 6608 blade where my PRIs are terminated and I also have a few ports on the 6608 configured conference bridges. My 6509 is running CATOS 8.5.2. Do you see compatibility issues between the 6608 and UCM 7.1.x ? I hope I don't have to upgrade the 6509 CATOS for the 6608 to work with UCM 7.1.x . I am also thinking about migrating the conference bridges to a 3845 router. Do you know what module I would need for the 3845 for conferencing resources ? and Can I configure a 3845 router as a voice gateway / conference bridge ?

It's not too clear on the 6608 support under CatOS. I'm pretty sure the module is supported under 7.0(1) as it's listed as a firmware download in the compatibility matrices, but it's not so clear if that's under CATOS. I think I'd send a question into Cisco on this one if I were in your position to clarify this.

As for the 3845 conferencing you need to go for PVDM2-8 thru 64 to provide the HW DSP resources. If you want to use the 3845 as a voice gateway then you'd use the NM-HDV2-T1/E1, assuming you want to terminate a PRI, and spec the appropriate number of PVDM DSP resources.

Run the config through the dynamic configurator to check and you should be able to confirm what your are speccing will work,

One more thing I'd like to ask you. Currently in my CCM 4.1.3 cluster I have the publisher configured to handle DHCP and TFTP for all locations (about 20 locations total). When I migrate to 7.1.x. Do I have to reconfigure DHCP and TFTP for the new cluster ? or DMA tool will migrate DHCP and TFTP over for me ? and if I have to reconfigure DHCP and TFTP, I am thinking about keeping DHCP and TFTP services on the publisher just like the way I have today with the current 4.1.3 cluster. Do you see any issues with this ? please advise !!!

Since UCM 7.1.x is running on Linux. Do you see any issues or concerns with having DHCP and TFTP services running on the publisher ?
