In a router the only time you will use a SVI is if you have some of the hwic etherswitch cards installed . The only way to put an address on those is to use a SVI and put the port in a vlan , you cannot make the etherswitch ports a routed port.

In the past , when the L3 switches are not popular , Creating vlan in the router is very often , but now ,L3 switches are very cheap , Vlan in router is not used as often as before.
