Interface is down

Hi,

I am creating a vlan on a 4948 and I have assigned the GigabitEthernet ports 1-6 to vlan 5.

I used the no shutdown command for each interface, but yet it still says GigabitEthernet 1/1 is down, lilne protocol is down. I understand the line protocol is down because we do not yet have the cables hooked up. However, why is the interface down?

The interface is down because it's not connected.

Oops! My bad!

As soon as I plugged in the cable, both went to UP.

I thought that the interface was supposed to be up and the line protocol down in this case.
