distribution layer device

We plan to join our different branch offices(numbering around 24 of them)to our hub, which then connects to a 7606 router before going to internet. We are scouting on a proper switch to be used for handling this distribution of traffic from branches to the main hub. Is 3750 or 2960G advisable. Cost is also a factor, but it can be overriden if performance benefits are much larger.

Please advise.

Thanks!

From what you describe, a 2960G would likely be fine. This assumes there's no real need to also route on this device. If there were, then a 3750G (or 3560G - if you don't expect to stack multiple units) would likely be a good choice.

Keep in mind, both the 2960 and 3560/3750 series devices generally are not wire-speed devices for higher port densities, especially gig, but seldom is such guaranteed performance required.

If there were no routing to be done on this, would this handle the huge switched traffic coming across from so many branches. & in case , if routing is required here , then what could be the ideal switch platform to be used?

Also, i found that bus speed of both 3750/2960 are same, but the packet handling capacity of 3750 exceeds much more than of 2960.

primary thing to seek advice is also if there is any end of support for 2960 nearing.

You would need to quantify "huge switched traffic". Both the 2960 and 3560/3750 often have 32 Gbps fabrics (good for 16 full duplex gig ports running at 100%). Their forwarding capacity (PPS) varies because of the number of ports individual models support until it caps out on the larger port models (generally those with more than 24 gig ports). However, unless you believe there will be much traffic between branches, your primary bottleneck is likely the uplink to the 7600, and if it is, and assuming even a 8 port gig Etherchannel, performance should be sufficient.

". . . but the packet handling capacity of 3750 exceeds much more than of 2960."

For which models? Stats I've seen put them very close for same number of like ports.

". . . is any end of support for 2960 nearing."

Don't know.

the model is 2960G 48-TCL.
