confusion of "inside" vs. "outside"

I'm curious if "inside" and "outside" have any significance beyond just a name for the interface. For instance, say I want to call my interfaces "internet" and "LAN". Should I substitute my terms for the terms "inside" and "outside"?

A better example...

In http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa82/configuration/guide/nat_control.html#wp1085822 it says "NAT control requires that packets traversing from an inside interface to an outside interface match a NAT rule". Now, in my case would this be true for "NAT control requires that packets traversing from an LAN interface to an internet interface match a NAT rule"? I'm a noob with ASA and nat-control has me really confused not to mention the syntax for configuring the various forms of NAT.

Hi,

You can give any name to your inside or outside interface.

Also, you may refer this PDF for configuring interface parameters.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/fwsm/fwsm32/configuration/guide/intfce_f.pdf

As far as NAT control is concerned, you just need to add "nat-control" NAT control requires NAT for inside hosts when they access the outside.
