Hello
I am curious if anyone has successfully used an Extreme Networks GBIC in a cisco Switch or any other off-brand for that matter?

Hello Adam,
years ago this was possible we used GBICs of different third party companies I don't know if newer IOS features include brand protection.
Generally, it is good to deploy them in pairs using the same type at the two ends of a link.
mixing can create some issues
Hope to help

Depends on the switch. If your switch is the 1st/2nd generation switches (2900M/3500XL, 2950G, 3550) then it may work. Not sure about the 2970 or the 2948G.
However, if you have the newer models, the answer is no. The appliance will interogate the modules if the unique Cisco-only algorithm is present. If this algorithm is missing the appliance will immediately error-disable the port.
