Finished CCNP, what next?

Unanswered Question
Oct 28th, 2009

I completed my CCNP last week. I want to start working towards CCIE. Actually I am interested in Security, VPNs and see the future in CCIE Security. What is CCIE people say on this? Traditonal way may be to do CCIE Switching and Routing.

I am a Networking professional and have an experience of almost 13 yrs.

Thanks for your opinions....

I have this problem too.

I am just CCSP, but my advice would be to play to your strengths.

If you already have CCNP and years of networking experience it would be much easier to become CCIE R&S then CCIE Security.

You say you are interested in Security, but could you actually work on firewalls, IPS etc in your daily job?

If not, you will be trying to hold down your networking job and studying for CCIE Security at the same time. I am sure it is possible, but looks like more difficult way of getting your CCIE.

If you still think that Security is for you, why not to start with CCSP first. It should take you no more then 12 mmonths with your experience and CCNP certification and then decide which CCIE specialism you prefer.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thanks Andrew,

In that case, I have to start with CCNA Security. That would be definately a long way. My question would be what's the comparison between CCIE R&S and other CCIE's, with regards to Market value?

Again I understand that CCIE has to be renewed every 2 years and that's a pain.

I am in much of the same boat you are. I have only CCNA but I have 12+ years IT and work with Cisco switches/routers everyday in my current job.

How long did it take you to get CCNP? In this market I think having those abbreviations after your name will be tremendously helpful.

Hello James,

I took more than 2 years. Actually for the last 3 papers I just took 12 months.

So may be 16 months is good enough.

These certifications definately helps you in these difficult days.If you are willing to go for CCNP,I suggest check your interests..Wireless,Voice, Security and accordingly go for the CCNP path... You may have to do CCNA again but it might be worthy enough at this stage.

Good luck to you for whatever you decide.
