Maximum HD 1080p Streams H.264 15 fps Per Client

Hi

If a customer has a graphics card which is ATI Or NVIDIA as recommended by Cisco, what are the maximum Live Streams can you have on a PC with 4 cores, 3GB RAM through VSOM? I have seen this on one occasion where the client PC can only display 3 HD Streams at any one time on ONE client PC thus failing connections to the fourth HD Stream? How can we measure what the maximum streams the client can handle and what factors determine this? I look forward to your reply. I have tried the workstation profiler however this does not have a saved profile for HD Cameras.

Hi,

We have found that the most you will get is 4. Not matter what machine you are running it on. You could try the  profiler tool on CiscoET.  This will tell you what you should get out of each computer you run it on.

HI All,

I have a core i7 laptop with 8 logical cores and an Nvidia GTS250M with 6GB of RAM.

I've managed to get XP SP2.... functional... on this beast by modifying some NVidia drivers.

As soon as I'm back in my lab, I'll create a sample clip with the specifications you've listed above and I'll see what I can hammer out with the profiler tool.  I agree though, attempting to get more than 4 would be very iffy.

If I don't report back in a few days... someone ping me and remind me ;-). If you are curious, that is.

Scott.

I managed to get 6 1080p streams functional on this laptop.  I'm desperately awaiting Windows Vista/7 support for VSOM.  I'm tired of XP.

Hi Scott,

I've been able to get 4 HD feeds to work on a HP workstation with a 512 video card. I was wondering if a bigger video card will guarantee the ability to do more feeds. I can see about 10 feeds at 720p showing up in a 4x4 view through the VSOM. Is there any video card you would recommend? I'm looking to buy a bigger PC just to add the card to. Also I wouldn't mind testing and sharing any results that I might find. Thanks.

Ultimately, I think Cisco's recommendations for excessive video accellerators is hooey.

I *wish* that work would give me the lab time to just play and experiment with what is actually going on within the VSM solution, but I don't think that will happen any time soon.

I also think that given the current inefficiencies in the client side software your best approach is just to get as many cores as possible in the client.  I'm currently awaiting a job where I actually proposed some hyper threaded 6 core Xeons (essentially 12-way) that were just over-the-top decked out because I didn't want to leave anything to chance.

I'd like to see how well that actually functions against the profiler.

I also did some experiments running the profiler (and profiles) from a RAM-disk to see if disk side throughput or access times had any impact on profiler scores. Unfortunately, it didn't have a perceivable effect.

Cheers!
