Effects of routes on router performance

Hi,

What is the relationship between RAM and routes? I want to implement 1000

static routes in a cisco 7206vxr (NPE -G1) and needed to find out what

effect it would have on my router. Should I do any upgrades? it has

229376K/32768K bytes of memory 509K of NVRAM. Anyone know where I can get documentation from Cisco on this?

Hi,

AFAIK, routes will be stored in memory and it implies that memory consumption is directly propotional to number of routes.

If my memory serves right, 1GB is recommended for full internet routing table.

Does your router have only static route or have any other routing protocl running?. Your memory requirment depends on how many routes you will have in your table.

HTH,

Nagendra

Hi Nagendra,

My router has only static routes and an ACL for redirecting traffic for wccp. The ACL will probably grow as the same proportion as the routes. Will my current router specs be enough?

With 256Mb of memory, I dont see any issue to have 100 routes in table.

HTH,

Nagendra
