In my understanding starting from WLC release 5.x there is no specific mesh firmware, instead there is a single firmare train and cisco introduced licensing in order to activate mesh features.
Now, if I have a WLC with 4.xM release I want to upgrade to 5.x or 6.x release do I need to get mesh licenses in order to maintain mesh features or there is some kind of automatic conversion?
Tnx,
Max.

Hi Max,
Outdoor mesh access points can be used with the without a wplus license. But you would require the wplus license for "Indoor" Mesh.

Note Other controller platforms (such as the 2100 and 4400 series controllers) also require a license for use with indoor mesh access points. See the Cisco Enterprise Wireless Mesh Licensing and Ordering Guide for details:
From this good doc;

Hope this helps!

Thank you Rob, that was very helpful.
I need inside mesh support, so it's now clear to me that I have to upgrade the wlc firmware and add the mesh license.
Thaks again,
Max.
