Solved: Microsoft VPN Client through 857 ADSL Router

Hi

I have set up a cisco 857 adsl router using CP Express (web interface) with standard NAT and firewall settings.

router seems to work fine apart from outbound pptp connections.

I am unable to use the MS VPN client to connect to our PPTP server in a remote location. I am not trying to use the VPN facilities on the 857 router, just allow pass-through from my laptop behind the router to an external vpn server.

The client instantly goes to "Verifying Userbane and Password" then hangs on this for a minute or two before failing.

Any suggestions would be apprecated.

The second link got me going in the right direction. It was the return GRE traffic that was being blocked.

I have never had to configure a firewall in the past where you have to manually allow return traffic for outbound rules!
