I need to ask about the installation of Cisco Unity Unified Messaging.
I read the following in design Guide for Cisco Unity:
For Cisco Unity systems configured for Unified Messaging, the message store software (IBM Lotus Domino or Microsoft Exchange) must be installed on a server other than the Cisco Unity server.
Any body can explain for me why it is a must to have dedicated messaging server?
I am not sure but I think I did it one time before on my VMware as unified messaging and on same server (all in one )

Hi,
When installing Unified Messaging, this means Cisco is expecting that your corporate Active Directory/Exchange or Domino environment is already in place where users are receiving email in Outlook or Lotus Notes client. Once you add Unity into your pre-existing directory infrastructure, the users start receiving their voice mail along with their email too.

Voice Mail Only deployment is where Unity is installed in its own completely isolated domain where users just use the phone or something like PCA to access their messages; voice mail does not get delivered to their Unified email inbox.

So, to answer your question, yes installing it in a test environment, functionally it will work but there are specific reasons/design performance considerations and requirements that state Unified environments must be on a separate mail server.
