Also Losing WAN Internet Connection on Wrvs4400n

Good afternoon,

1) My network configuration is in attached file

2) Internal DNS server configured on Windows 2008 R2, users are pointed to this DNS server

3) Nslookup tests produces following results:

a. A record resolution:

Default Server: srv-server.firm.local
Address: 192.168.253.249> www.google.com
Server: srv-server.firm.local
Address: 192.168.253.249DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.l.google.com
Address: 74.125.87.105

b. MX record resolution:
Default Server: srv-server.firm.local
Address: 192.168.253.249

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.

4) There is always a delay in DNS resolution, some packets are lost – users must press F5 several times to get the page…….

5) The problem is caused by Linksys router, reason is explained in Log on Linksys:

Oct 28 09:59:49 - Reply packet was to small. Ignoring reply from xxx.yyy.zzz.www (IP of D-Link router)
Oct 28 09:59:49 - unexpected server: aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd (IP of Windows 2008R2 server]

6) When a Linksys router isn't connected in network infrastructure (we try to use Microsoft ISA, Huawei router or direct connection), everything works like a charm.

What firmware version are you using on your router?

Why are DNS packets hold for small size?

Will be new firmware available soon? DNS is broken by router and this is a big problem…..

You have given too little information to really understand the networking environment you are working in. Also the referenced URL, the gentleman there doesn't clearly define how he has setup his Local area network. info regarding his DNS server, if the WRVS4400N doing DNS proxy... bla bla bla..I can only guess, but hopefully he contacted the Small business Support Center.

To save time, and maybe expedite a fix, it would be good to also open a incident with the Small business Support Center (SBSC). It would be good to reference the other URL you referenced, to the TAC technician so he/she can query David Carr.

I encourage you to place a call regarding this with the Small business support center. Anecdotally the other URL you reference, does point towards a failure in the operation of the WRVS4400N, but still don't know enough about his working networking environment.

Cisco: come off it already. This is a piece of crap router, and everyone knows it. This issue has been known for over two years, it affects just about every unit, regardless of firmware. The WRVS400N is a rip-off. We customers have been victimized by poor quality control and non-existent customer support by Cisco and it's small biz brand.

Poster: unfortunately, there is no solution for your problem other than to buy a non-Linksys piece of crap in the future. You need to check out linksysinfo.org and read all the reviews you can get your hands on, and NOT buy a newly-released Linksys product. This brand has been turned into a hit-or-miss sinkhole for money, and Cisco just doesn't give a damn.

In an attempt to be helpful, when you try to resolve off a different DNS server do you still get the same symptoms, or is it only when you resolve off your internal DNS?

If you need a public DNS server to try to resolve against, OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com) is a good one to try, the IP addresses are at the bottom of their homepage. 4.2.2.2 is also publicly available.

You can´t resolve off a different DNS with wrvs4400n and firmware V 1.1.13.

It´s over a year since i´m waiting for the firmware that fix that.
