Hello everyone,
I am trying to study for the CCNA test and I'm working with 2 switches trying to configure vtp.
The first switch seems to be ok but the second switch when I go into config mode the only option under
vtp is file. How do I get to the other options to change from server mode which the switch is currently set for.
I can't seem to use the vtp domain, vtp password
Switch1(config)#vtp ?
file Configure IFS filesystem file where VTP configuration is stored.
Model number: WS-C3524-XL-EN
Version 12.0(5)WC17
Switch1#show vtp status
VTP Version : 2
Configuration Revision : 0
Maximum VLANs supported locally : 254
Number of existing VLANs : 5
VTP Operating Mode : Server
VTP Domain Name :
VTP Pruning Mode : Disabled
VTP V2 Mode : Disabled
VTP Traps Generation : Disabled
MD5 digest : 0x57 0xCD 0x40 0x65 0x63 0x59 0x47 0xBD
Doesn't the IOS support this?
Thanks for your help,
Matt

From enable mode go into vlan database mode and from there you should be able to access the vtp commands ie.
3524# vlan database
3524(vlan)# vtp ?

Jon,
Thank you for the help, you were right on!
Is it the IOS version causing me to have to go into vlan database to get to the commands?
Just curious...
Thanks again...

vlan database mode used to be the way to configure vlan/vtp information in IOS based switches. Then Cisco added the ability to use config mode to configure vlans. Some old switches like the 3524xl only support vlan database mode. Most newer switches support both but give you a warning message if you try to use vlan database about it being depreciated and to use config mode instead.

Jon's right. The 2900/3500XL VTP can only be configured using the VLAN database. Starting from the 2950/3550 onward, VTP can be configured from the configuration mode.
