what type of network cables am i suppose to connect to switch and router?

hello i am learning ccna. are u suppopse to connect Xover cables to routers n switches? i did that but nothing wants to connect. i cant ping it. when i put straight through cable, it connects. what am i suppose to do

switch to switch = crossover

switch to router = straight through

router to router = crossover

host to switch = crossover

Note that with modern switches that support auto-mdx you can actually connect 2 switches together with a straight thru and the switches will auto adjust.
