We have added a 4-port ethernet module to a customers 3845 switch. When he looks at the router to configure the card it only comes up as a layer 2 switch and cannot have any ip addresses added to it. Did we buy the wrong card or is there an IOS issue? The current IOS is
Cisco IOS Software, 3800 Software (C3845-IPBASE-M), Version 12.3(14)T6, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

You haven't actually said what card it is
However assuming it is a HWIC-4ESW then these are L2 switches only ie. you cannot configure the ports as L3 routed ports and assign IPs -
However you should be able to allocate the L2 ports into different vlans and create L3 vlan interfaces to route between them.

Are there any L3 switch modules for a 3845 router? I cannot seem to find any.

You can route with the hwic you just can't put a ip address directly on the interface as someone else said. Create a layer 3 SVI (interface vlan X) and then put the interface into the correct vlan "switchport access vlan X" . Also create the layer 2 vlan in the vlan database.

i am asuming you bought a 4 port HWIC card and its purely layer 2 card and we cant assign an ip add ta an interface only thing you can do is create an SVI give it an ip add and assign the port to the respective SVI.
If you are planning to buy more cards try 1 port or 2 port HWIC they are only hwic that are layer 3 besides that NME module will fulfil your requirement.
Hope that helps
