Connecting to transparent vlan structure from server vtp clients

Hello

I have a primary server vtp structure (30+ switches) for normal traffic and a transparent vtp setup (2 4506s) for backups and server management. The transparent zone has multiple private vlans for our various subnets, the primary group acting as the nexus point. What is the best way for admins on various client vtp switches to connect to the mgmt vlan on a transparent vtp domain?

Hello Harris,

you have to ensure that the management vlan is defined in all the VTP transparent switches.

The management vlan has to be created also on one VTP server node so that it can be known on vtp clients.

The two vlan-ids must match

This vlan-id is to be permitted on trunk ports (or access ports) between the vtp clients and the transparent part of the network.

The effective topology for the management Vlan depends from the STP settings on all the population of switches: to be noted that the management vlan root bridge can be in the transparent portion of the network, in that case it is likely that management of the switches will happen via the transparent part of the network.

If one switch in the transparent part misses the local configuration of the management vlan-id or it is not permitted in its trunk ports this can lead to problems.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
