VLAN trunking speed and duplex

Maybe this is a stupid question, but must the speed and duplex be hard set on each side of the trunk, or can auto negotation work?

No you don't have to set it explicilty. In fact with gigabit the recommendation is to leave to auto negotiate.

you dont have to hard code it, auto negotiate should just work fine for you unless you run into a situation where you have to hard code the link for speed and uplex.

Hi Erik,

I agree with the answers above, this is only untrue when using fibre ports where by they can have fixed setting.  I had to change the duplex settings on my fibre ports as one side could only be set at full duplex (non cisco switch) the other (cisco switch) was auto.
