No rapid-pvst on 2950

Hi all, first post, and i suppose i better say noob alert, lol, well, kind of, i'm doing my Honours year at uni for Networking and System Support.

Anyway, for my Honours project i'm doing spanning tree enhancements in small LAN's, which i have to do in Opnet (worse luck), but i bought some 3550's just before i started back as i need to practice and to test stuff anyway, but blew my two 2950's so i had to buy two more!!!

Haven't had much time to play about with them because of other subjects (namely Pervasive Grids, horrible subject!), but now i'm doing my interim report, and i'm now starting to get back into configuring switches again.

However (sorry for the long intro), i cant enable rapid-pvst on the 2950's, there's no option, only for pvst. I was under the impression that the switches had to be at least 12.1(13), and mine are 12.1(19) according to a sh ver. Here's some info from one of the swicthes, and if anybody can shed some light on this i'd be most grateful as i need rapid spanning tree for my project.

You have the Standard Image running and RSTP is not supported on Standard Image until version 12.1(20)EA2 -

2950 Release Notes

12.1(19) does support RSTP but only with the Enhanced Image.

So you either need the EI for your current IOS version or the SI for 12.1(20)EA2 or later.

The Cisco Catalyst 2950SX-48-SI, 2950T-48-SI, 2950SX-24, 2950-24 and 2950-12 are standalone, fixed-configuration, managed 10/100 switches providing basic workgroup connectivity for small to medium-sized companies. These wire-speed desktop switches come with Cisco Standard Image software features and offer Cisco IOS® Software functions for basic data, video, and voice services at the edge of the network.

You need the enhanced image feature set.

Thanks for the quick replies Jon and lamav.

Ahhhh, i wasn't aware of that. I just assumed with the IOS being 12.1(19) it would have have rapid-pvst on it.

Ah well, back to Ebay, lol, the switches have to run rapid spanning tree as i'm comparing portfast, backbonefast and uplink fast against rstp.

I'll be back though, i always seem to have no end of problems which i normally manage to solve eventually, but there's always the odd few that stump me.

Cheers again,

Gary.
