10 GB Sup32 vs Sup720 with a WS-C6748-GE cards

Currently have alot of data center switches based on Sup720-Base sup's with 1-3 WS-C6748 gigabit cards for servers.   Rather than adding 10 Gb cards to upgrade the current 1 Gb uplinks to the distribution, I have an engineer recommending that I upgrade the bandwidth using a number of spare WS-Sup32-10GE-3B however the 720 is a fabric enabled sup while the sup32 isn't fabric enabled.  Will the WS-C6748-GE cards even work with a Sup32 or is this going to require a fabric sup for the cards to operate ?

Hi,

You will need Sup-720 for 6748 cards.

Please refer to this document for more info:

As Reza said the WS-X67xx modules only work with a Sup720. These modules are fabric only ie. they do not support a connection to the 32Gbps shared bus and as the Sup32 is a bus based supervisor the two will simply not work together.

You may want to have a word with your engineer

Hello Dlubansky,

as Jon has noted you may want to inform your colleague of this evident mismatch.

I would send him a link to C6500 architecture

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/prod_white_paper0900aecd80673385.html

it should help him to change his mind about this.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

I would tell the engineer that he's talking kaka...(its an industry term) :-)

The ONlY thing that is better about Sup-32 vs Sup-720 is the price.

Sup-32 $20000

Sup-720 $38000

All list price

But then again with Sup-32 you can not use 6748 cards
