Cisco 7960 Phones Handset no dialtone

I have three 7960 phones that came to me from different sources. Im registering the phones with a UC540. The phones load there relevant files and I can make calls using the speaker, I hear dialtone and I can make a call. However if I attempt to make a call using the handset there is no dialtone and the display does not indicate that the phone is off hook? Its as though non of the switch hooks are working on all three phones. Am I missing some thing as far as configuration?

I would start by resting the IP Phones. Here's the procedure:

  1. Unplug the power cable from the phone, and then plug in the cable again.

The phone begins its power up cycle.

  2. Immediately press and hold # and while the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons begin to flash in sequence, release #.

The Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons flash in sequence in order to indicate that the phone waits for you to enter the key sequence for the reset.

  3. Press 123456789*0# within 60 seconds after the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons begin to flash.

If you repeat a key within the sequence, for example, if you press 1223456789*0#, the sequence is still accepted and the phone resets.

If you do not complete this key sequence or do not press any keys, after 60 seconds, the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons no longer flash, and the phone continues with its normal startup process. The phone does not reset.

If you enter an invalid key sequence, the buttons no longer flash, and the phone continues with its normal startup process. The phone does not reset.

If you enter this key sequence correctly, the phone displays this prompt:

    Keep network cfg? 1 = yes 2 = no

  4. In order to maintain the current network configuration settings for the phone when the phone resets, press 1. In order to reset the network configuration settings when the phone resets, press 2.

If you press another key or do not respond to this prompt within 60 seconds, the phone continues with its normal startup process and does not reset. Otherwise, the phone goes through the factory reset process.

Good luck,

MK

Thanks for your help, I did not know that was the method for the phone reset. I went ahead and reset the phone using the method you described and it did reset back to factory. However still no dialtone on any of the handsets. The phones work on speaker I can make calls etc but no dialtone or able to make calls with the handsets.

I notice under the status message for each phone there is a comment that reads.

File Not Found:

Every phone has the above same message with its unique mac address

I ran a debug tftp events and noticed that the phone is looking for files that do not exist:

Thanks again for the help. Its fixed, it turns out that the 7960 has a problem sometimes with the switch hooks not making good contact inside the phone.

I pulled the phone apart 4 screws and cleaned the contact surface with an eraser. I also retentioned the spring. I did this on all phones and now all phones have dialtone when I lift the handset.
