%SYSTEM-1-INITFAIL: Network boot is not supported.

GIULIO FAINI

Level 1

Hi,

I have a 6500 with 2 SUP7203B running SXI3 and after I reload slot 5, it tries to boot using a bootstring I never configured and that  is not in the bootvar...

....

string is bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-33.SXI3.bin

...

see below for the complete output log.

Now the 6500  is stuck looping forever with this error:

%SYSTEM-1-INITFAIL: Network boot is not supported.

If i break and i try to type boot ot boot sup-bootflash:s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-33.SXI3.bin, it still try to use the bootdisk: string...

Both sup-bootflash have the image SXI3 in sup-bootflash:.

The bootvar is pointing to bootdisk. According to release notes, we must use sup-bootdisk:
to boot if he is using a ATA 512MB:

** Supervisor Engine 720 Common Features
• Integrated 720-Gbps Switch Fabric
• 64-MB bootflash device or CompactFlash adapter with 512 MB CompactFlash card
(WS-CF-UPG=):

– 64-MB bootflash device (sup-bootflash:) supported in all releases
– WS-CF-UPG= (sup-bootdisk:) supported in:
— Release 12.2(18)SXE5 and later releases
— Release 12.2(18)SXF and later releases

Please change the bootvar with: "bootsystem flash
sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservices_wan-mz.122-18.SXF6.bin", save the configuration and try
again.

Make sure that the above statement is the first one in the bootvar list, if needed delete
the old boot statement.

Release notes are located here:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/122sx/ol_4164.htm#wp2560955

You need to chnage the name to sup-bootdisk and that should work.

Hope that helps.

regards,

Varun

Thanks Varun

I will change it to sup-bootdisk,

anyway do you have idea how to get out of rommon now... it is stuck rebooting forever...

i try to do

rommon 2 > boot sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-33.SXI3.bin

but still insists in...

if its in rommon mode

just ebter "boot" and hit ebter

Regards,

Varun

This supervisor i reload is in slot 5.

I tried but it keeps rebooting and rebooting.

Only after I send a BREAK and type boot, it boots correctly and it goes in standby mode as the other supervisor in slot 6 is active.

Hey,

Could you get the switch up by manual intervention, and give me the output of "show file system", and show boot.

For the supervisor 720 to boot off internal flash drives, the boot statement has to be boot system flash bootdisk:

For the network boot failure messages check the following out:

Hi,

It points toward a bad chassis.

Do u have any spare chassis to test this out.

HTH,

Rajeev.

Its not a bad chassis.  I just had the same issue today with a sup720-3b.  I have tried multiple chassis/codes/flash cards.  All my spare sup720's boot just fine in all the chassis I have tried and flash cards.  When I tried to load 12.2.18SFX code it came up with memory errors.  Bad sup module not chassis.  Any one know how to wipe the startup-config from ROMMON on a non-bootable sup?  Will be calling TAC to replace.

You can boot to ignore the startup configuration using 0x2142.

Type confreg 0x2142 at the rommon 1> prompt.

Once loaded you can write erase or edit the configuration the way you need.

The Sup won't boot any code.  So changing the confreg doesn't do anything for me.  Just wondering if there is a way from ROMMON (not booting up) to delete the startup config.

I had the exact same problem. What I did is I broked it and at the rommon prompt I simply put boot with nothing else. That made the SUP boot up and I changed the boot string to boot from disk0: and I put the IOS on the compact flash in put it in slot 0. I didn't try to fix it from sup-boot-flash: to sup-bootdisk:, I just had a comact flash that I could spare and used it. I suspect the sup-bootflash got corrupted somehow.... Hope that helps....
