SNMP OpenFilesorSockets

Hi,

We received some warning from our monitoring team.

They monitor OpenFiles/Socket using SNMP monitoring. They use the following OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.15497.1.1.1.19.0

Apparently the number of sockets is constantly increasing throughout the year starting from 400 and now being at over 1200

For example, when I run a netstat in CLI on active sockets, it reports around 500 sockets, whereas the snmp monitoring reports over 1200?

We've got also a Ironport that we use for test and after reboot with no mail trafic, netstat reports at most 40 connexions (mostly LDAP connexions) and snmp monitoring reports around 500.

Is there something I'm missing?

Can someone explain me what exactly this OID monitors.

Hello Arnaud,

I think your best option is to open a support case for this.

SNMP is considered to be "complex" and not many people are using it in combination with Ironport.

in the past Cisco support engineer Karl Young helped us a lot with making Ironport SNMP "work".

I believe that 6.5.1 and 6.5.2 did not free-up file descriptors from old GUI sessions. This could account for the increase over time.

Bug 49685 is fixed from 6.5.3.
