Transcoding.

Dear All,

I have HO with 40 branches connecting to it. We have 1841 router in HO while 1801 in branches. We plan to deploy CUCM. If we dont require conferencing and no anlaog-> digtal vice versa. Now if i plan to use G.729 everywhere, including HO LAN plus Branhces, do i still need DSPs ? I know its usually kept in design that LAN uses G.711 while over WAN its best to use G.729, but that will involve transcoding which in turn requires DSPs. If i use the same codec G.729 throughout, do i still need DSPs ?

Hi,

Transcoding will only be invoked when two different type of codecs are involved. The problem with using G729 codec throughout is that there are certain features like software MTP and software conference bridge which only support G711 codec so they will not work.
