Frame-relay home lab

Unanswered Question
Jan 5th, 2010

What would I need to build a 3 or 4 node/host Frame-relay 'environment' to help study for CCNA/CCNP?

I already have the following:

1 - 2620

1 - 2621

1 - 2651XM

1 - 2950-12

2 - 2950-24

2 - 2924

(and an 851W, but ...)

...all with the latest IOS I can get for each.

I may just go with a simulator, but then which one(s) are recommended?

I have this problem too.

You will need a 2522 router with some DTE/DCE cables. It comes with 10 Serial interfaces

You also need Serial WAN cards for your 2600 routers.

Ebay is the cheapest place for this type of router

Hi and thanks for the response.

When you say serial WAN cards, do you mean DB-60 type (WIC-1T) or WIC-1T/CSU ?

Correct, you would need DB-60 type (WIC-1T) .

If you just want to play with Fram-Relay, The other option is to get a couple of 2500 routers, they already come with DB-60 type (WIC-1T)  WAN card built in, but I have to warn you that they are very old and slow and you can only run up to IOS 12.2 and no later.

Okay, thanks.  If I buy something, I'll just get the 2522 and go with that.  But for the cost of buying all this stuff, I might be as well buying a simulator.  I don't see F/R being a big deal in my future (vice MPLS, VPNs, etc).  Of course, I don't know for certain, can't see the future!  :-)

All you really need is just 3 routers to set up decent frame-relay and play with it

Which one, WIC-1T or CSU type?  I would guess WIC-1T.  Is that correct?

(sorry I'm new with Cisco and F/R)
