UC520 Upgrade Problems from 12.24YB to 15.0.1XA

I upgraded our internal 520 from 12.24YB to 15.0.1XA yesterday and have had very mixed results.  It did succeed in upgrading the IOS to 15, but every time it tries to upgrade CUE it gives a tftp/ftp error, have tried from several different computers.  Since then, intercom buttons on one of our internal users are showing one name but actually going to a different user and it takes about 6 minutes to open the configure > voice tab in CCA 2.2(1) or to send changes made there to the phones.

I am re-downloading the software pack in case it was a bad version/corrupted download

Here is the error status:

I redownloaded the uc520 8.0 software pack and received the same error.

This may have occurred since CCA didnt offer phone load management during his upgrade.  This happened to me on one unit this morning (I upgraded 3).

The UC520 flash is not large enough for all these phone loads (which it tries to put them all on flash).

I suggested a workaround.  John will try and report back to this thread.

This looks like there is a problem upgrading the CME files and not CUE.  Can you verify that you only have 1 NIC enabled?  Can you upload the CCA logs from when this happened?

The root cause was that during the upgrade process it never showed me the phone load page and asked me which loads I needed.  Because of this it tried to load all loads and the flash does not have enough space available.  Here is the workaround which Steve gave me.  Using this you will pick and choose which phone load to delete directly from flash after it is copied from CCA using the "delete /force /recursive flash:filename" command

1) Open CCA and begin upgrade as usual.  Make sure you are watching the status to see when it switches to "Uploading CME Phone Loads"

2) Open telnet/ssh to the UC500 at the same time

3) type dir then cd phones - this will show the flash directory and then change to the phone folder

4) once the status in CCA changes to Uploading CME phone loads, hit dir in telnet/ssh again and you should see a folder appear in flash:/phones/ (7975 was first in my case)

5) Let it complete the copy of 7975, only when the next folder starts to copy would you issue the delete command if you do not need this phone load:

I wanted 7975 so I left it alone, I typed dir and waited until it was done copying 7970_7971 which I do not need and then issued the delete command.  Only delete AFTER it has started the next folder, don't delete a copy in progress.  If you fall behind you can tell which folder to delete based on the timestamps.

I GIVE UP!!

Here's the deal.

UC520W 8 user bri model. I'm trying to update the latest 8.0.4 ios and cue files.

Used 3 different machines, here is the 4th one:

Pentium 4 3.0GHz, running windows XP

did a fresh install, turned off firewall and other services i suspected.

Installed CCA 2.2.5. Upgrading through CCA  and when it comes to Upgrade CUE Module: Install new image  it gives the following error:

failed to upgrade........

Please make sure there is no FTP/TFTP server running on your PC.

I did what you guys suggested. I didn't select any phone loads, only the ones you cannot uncheck 521_524. During the upload I even deleted this file from flash and still gives me this error.

I don't know where to look anymore.

Hi,

Steve DiStefano mentioned it in an earlier posting.  The same thing has happened to me before where i got a message TFTP failure, it's a pretty much generic message to tell you it;

  • either could write to flash or
  • either you have another TFTP or FTP server actually running, and that's why it could write to flash.
  • Worst case scenario, is that flash is corrupt and needs to be reformatted or replaced.

Was the TFTP failure because you didn't erase the old flash contents by ticking "auto disk cleanup" ?  See my screen capture below, and select if you haven't done so already then select  auto disk cleanup.

Auto disk cleanup erases CME flash contents  and reloads almost everything, except  custom phone wallpaper images and custom audio moh files or anything you manually downloaded to the UC520.

In my case I had to replace the 128M CFlash card...arghh

Hi Dave,

during the update process I logged in through a telnet session to check what happens. I even deleted all the phone loads and the ios image that was uploaded once, just to check if the problem is space on the disk.

- I'm positive there is no problem with the flash.

- definitely no ftp tftp server running. i checked, double and triple checked it.

- auto disk clean up is checked

If there are no problems with the flashdisk and there's no (t)ftp server running...what else could it be. I tried several different computers.

Am I missing maybe something else on the UC520. It always stops when installing  cue.

Search 'Cca prerequisites' on this forum and run the 6 steps

i did and  it still didn't work. i have some problems with my pings..see message and command information below:

I have some problems upgrading my UC520 software to the latest version 8.0.4 but i constantly keep getting ftp/tftp message.

Please check the output from the different commands below.

Entering the cue looks a little different. But the biggest problem is pinging from and to the cue. I don't know how to solve this problem. Hope you can help me out:

You should be able to route back and forth between your PC and the CUE, so thats the problem.

Something also strange here.   Why is there an enable password set in CUE?  Or is your cut and

paste out of sequence? or is your user id actually the word 'enable'?

Looks like 10.1.10.1 is not reachable.  Not good.  You can ping CUE loopback, but not the Int 0/0 Service Engine

'sh ip route'  on IOS shows what?

You dont have dual NIC enabled I can tell from your netstat command.

Open a TAC case if this is critical for you.

It is funny you show - "gateway of last resort is not set"

Also you could have a firewall blocking the ping and access...   remove all your access-lists and try...

Also I have seen where CCA changed my statement for the interface for my TFTP  Check for this line...

ip tftp source-interface BVI1 (where BVI1) is the interface that can communicate with your PC.

You should have something like this on your UC500....for default gateway...

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx is your IP subnet and host for your gateway)

ip route 10.1.10.1 255.255.255.255 Integrated-Service-Engine0

Also what is the routing like on your PC?  What is your gateway?  You need the either have the UC500 your gateway or you need to add a route to the 10.1.0.0 255.255.0.0 network on your gateway (going to the uC500). Do a "route print" on your PC from the DOS prompt.

that was the problem. routes weren't correct.

I changed it using the commands in your post. and after that i could ping the cue from my computer and vice versa.

After that i tried to upgrade the cue to the latest version.

it's past 2 am here sunday morning, and it was all worth it!!

one more question.

if i want to shutdown (power off) the unit, i have to shutdown cue first. what is the correct way:

1) putting interface service-engine to a shutdown , or;

2) getting into cue and give the offline command

Awaiting your answer.

There is no gracefull shutdown cabability in CCA and I have never taken any special actions when I unplug mine, other than use the SAVE button on CCA which saves both IOS and CUE and make sure no activity or connections are active when I do.

Having said that, most deployments should be run on Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) so they never really power off, and use the shutdown command when befroe the battery runs down as found with Google...
