Catalyst 4900M - Interface Numbering

Hello there all,

I was wondering if a interface numbering scheme is available for the 4900M.  Configuration includes 1 x 8Port 10G and 1 x 20Port 1G modules.  Would like to understand

  1. How the slots are addressed
  2. Interface Addressing
  3. TwinGig interface addressing

No, I have ordered these switches and thought that whilst waiting for delivery I will write the configurations, prepare patching/cabling schedules prepare the diagrams etc....

Thanks, have seen that document it talks about 4500 series chassis and modules not 4900M specifically.

Cisco Switch Interfaces

For Cisco Catalyst 4948 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switches and Cisco Catalyst 4900M Switches, an interface name is composed of three parts that are formatted as follows:

slot_number /port_number

The variables are as follows:

slot_number: The slot number is the number of the switch slot in which the interface module is installed. In a fixed-port configuration such as for a Cisco Catalyst 4948 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switch, the slot number is always 1. Module slots are numbered 1 to 3, from bottom to top and left to right. The Cisco Catalyst 4900M has one fixed slot, which is slot 1. The top-two half-slots are slots 2 and 3, left to right, respectively.

port_number: The port number is the number of the port on the interface module or the switch.

So, in this case I assume the 2x10G interfaces would be Ten1/1 and Ten1/2. Thank you.

Hello Jay,

the onboard 10 Gigabit interfaces are numberd as TenGigabitEthernet 1/1 up to TenGigabitEthernet 1/8. If you put the 20 Port WS-X4920-GB-RJ45 Module in the first module slot beneath the system and power LEDs, the Gigabit ports are numbered from GigabitEthernet 2/1 up to GigabitEthernet 2/20. If you plan to use TwinGig adapters, you have to use one of the TenGigabitEthernet expansion modules (4-Port WS-X4904-10GE or 8-Port WS-X4908-10GE, 2:1 overbooked), because the onboard TenGigabitEthernet interfaces does not support TwinGig adapters.

Note the 4908-10GE card has 16 GigE interfaces defined for use with CVR-X2-SFP= (TwinGig), counting up in port number from where the 10G interfaces left off.
