Hi,

I see the below error thrown from my monitoring tool:

"TemperatureSensor_Fault_CiscoEntityFRU TEMP-SWITCH [module 3 EARL inlet temperature Sensor] is OutOfRange. Indicates that the temperature for this device is outside of the normal operating range and exceeds RelativeTemperatureThreshold."

This is a Cisco 6509-E switch with the below card features on module 3:

SF3SW4>sh mod 3
Mod Ports Card Type                              Model              Serial No.
--- ----- -------------------------------------- ------------------ -----------
  3   48  CEF720 48 port 10/100/1000mb Ethernet  WS-X6748-GE-TX     SAL1010F9GD

Mod MAC addresses                       Hw    Fw           Sw           Status
--- ---------------------------------- ------ ------------ ------------ -------
  3  0017.0e88.e8e8 to 0017.0e88.e917   2.3   12.2(14r)S5  12.2(18)SXF4 Ok

Mod  Sub-Module                  Model              Serial       Hw     Status

  3  Distributed Forwarding Card WS-F6700-DFC3B     SAD101904LL  4.2    Ok

Mod  Online Diag Status
---- -------------------
  3  Pass

The temparature status on the module is :

SF3SW4> sh environment temperature module 3
  module 3 outlet temperature: 48C
  module 3 inlet temperature: 30C

Can you please let me know what should be the acceptable inlet / outlet temperature on WS-X6748-GE-TX card?

Please look at the following link (Table 2-39) for certified operating temperature and designed and tested temperature.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/hardware/Module_Installation/Mod_Install_Guide/02ethern.html#wp1041175

Operating temperature

Certified for operation: 32° to 104°F (0° to 40°C)

Designed and tested for operation: 32° to 130°F (0° to 55°C)

How are the other modules' temperature in the same chassis? The inlet temperature is a bit high. IMO, you should check your room temperature also.

jerry

Hi,

I have got the room temparature checked & everything seems to be quite normal. No issues seen here. All the other devices in the room are working in teh normal temaprature range.

Looking at your top 4 line cards, I don't believe this is a HW issue. IMO, your room temperature is a bit high, you might want to lower for another 5C to see the result. Also, you can check if there is anything blocking the outlet of the 6500 (should be the right hand side of the chassis when you are facing the line cards).

module 1:
  module 1 power-output-fail: OK
  module 1 outlet temperature: 48C
  module 1 inlet temperature: 28C

module 1 EARL outlet temperature: 36C
module 1 EARL inlet temperature: 35C
module 2:
  module 2 power-output-fail: OK
  module 2 outlet temperature: 47C
  module 2 inlet temperature: 30C

module 2 EARL outlet temperature: 36C
module 2 EARL inlet temperature: 38C
module 3:
  module 3 power-output-fail: OK
  module 3 outlet temperature: 48C
  module 3 inlet temperature: 30C

module 3 EARL outlet temperature: 38C
module 3 EARL inlet temperature: 40C
module 4:
  module 4 power-output-fail: OK
  module 4 outlet temperature: 42C
  module 4 inlet temperature: 33C

  module 4 device-1 temperature: 37C
  module 4 device-2 temperature: 41C
