VTP migration

Hi,

we have a typical VTP v2 server-client structure.

Server--->Client (6509-->2960)

Now we are going to replace the 6509 with a VSS but this replacement cannot be made at once so both 6509 and VSS must co-exist for a while in the network.

Now my question: what is the best practice to migrate the VTP Server from the Catalyst 65009 to the VTP Server on the VSS?

Thank you.

Hello,

I do not see any radical problems here. It is allowed to have multiple VTP Server switches in a network.

After setting up the VSS while having it still disconnected from your network, make sure that the VTP domain name and the VTP password (if used) are set up properly on the VSS. Also make sure that the VTP revision number as displayed in the show vtp status is lower than the VTP revision number in your network. Ideally, the VTP revision number on the VSS shall be set to 0 which can be done by setting the VSS to the VTP Transparent mode and back to VTP Server.

You now may set the VSS to the VTP Server mode and connect it via a trunk to your 6509. After the link comes up, the VSS will download the current VTP database. At your convenience, you may then remove the 6509.

Best regards,

Peter

Hi

Thanks for reply

As per the your network topology we can connect the switches

Before that Pl check the new core switch settings

Config rev number  (0) default value new switches (the value should not be the higher then existing switch)

VTP Server

VTP mode

VTP password ( if you have )

You can verify the following command

show vtp status

configure the new switch

VTP mode : server

VTP domain : your existing (domain check the old switch )

VTP password (  same form old sw )

Establish Trunk connnection to new switch

This will download existing L2 VLANS and VTP info.

Later stage you can remove old 6509 take the config and put it into new switch.

Hi Peter,

thank you very much for your answer. I have a question though: if both VTP Server are active in the network on which one do i configure new vlans so they propagete throughout the network?

regards, Chris

Hello Chris,

You can use either one to make changes to the VLAN database. As long as there is a continuous sequence of trunks throughout the topology, changes to VLAN database made on any VTP server are propagated over the entire VTP domain.

Peter

Hi

I need some clarification

1 . you are going to introduce new 2 6500 VSS sup engine installed switches in the network ?

2 . This Switch will act as core/dist later stages ?

3  The existing switch 6509 is installed with HSRP ?

regards

krishna

Hi krishna,

thats right, at the moment we have one 6509 with 2 SUP-720 Engines as Core Layer in our network. This single chassie is going to be replaced with 2 6509-V (VSS) Switches in the core layer.

To your question 3: no, we do not have any redundand links to the distribution layer. This is what we are trying to achieve whith the new vss,

Regards,

Chris

Hi

Let me brief  my understandings

Scenario: 1

=======

1. The current core switch (6509) is running with 2 sup engines single core switch

                               Core   ( single )

                                 |

                                 |

                             Access

                                 |

                                 |

                              Users

Scenario: 2

========

2, Two numbers of vss sup engines new core switches going to install .

                    Core ----------------Core  (physical)

                                 |

                             Core      (Logical )

                                 |

                                 |

                             Access

                                 |

                                 |

                              Users

From scenario 1 to migrate scenario 2

1. Take backup of existing configurations form old switch , Install the new vss switches and configure  the new switches with the help of backup

Hello krishna,

yes thats right BUT we have to use the old 6509 AND the VSS simultanous for a while

   Core ----------------Core  (physical)

                                 |

Core      (Logical ) -------trunk------------- (old) Core

                                 |                                                         |

                                 |                                                         |

                             Access                                               Access

                                 |                                                         |

                                 |                                                         |

                              Users                                                  Users

Future:

   Core ----------------Core  (physical)

                                 |

                             Core      (Logical )

                                 |

                                 |
