Solved: IOS question

Hi group,

We are running with 3560 Catalyst switches and are looking to upgrade the IOS. Currently, we're running 12.2(35)SE5 (c3560-advipservicesk9-m). Can someone give some guideance on choosing an IOS? I do know to look for GD (general deployment), but anything wrong with jumping software release families to, say, 12.3?

The only difference in Advance IP services image is that they support IPV6 Routing & Services and CEF V6.. Im attaching a pdf which has feature wise differences between these IOSs.Hope this helps.

Hi Chris

You have a lot of ED releases for 3560... You can look at 12.2 (53) SE IOS which is the latest in the train.. you might not have 12.3 on 3560's yet...

Min DRAM - 128 MB, Flash - 16 MB...

Look at the relase notes and have a look at caveats before upgrading.. make sure the open caveats dont affect your production traffic by any means.. Look at the following URL for release notes:

There is no 12.3 releases on any of the 3X50 series switches , use the latest in the 12.2 train for updated security and or enhancements. GD code is really a thing of the past . they have already indicated that there will be no more GD code after 12.3 .

The only thing i would add to Raj's post is that if there is no reason to upgrade then personally i don't. If you are looking for new features then find the minimum release needed and then work through the caveats sections as Raj suggested.

One last question: what is the difference between the IP Services and Advanced IP Services? We are currently using the advanced ip services. What file should I use for VoIP? If it matters, we're running Shoretel voice.

"The Cisco Catalyst 3560 Series can be purchased with the IP Base or IP Services licenses pre-installed. The IP Base license (formerly called the Standard Multilayer Image, or SMI) offers advanced QoS, rate limiting, ACLs, and basic static and Routing Information Protocol (RIP) routing functions. The IP Services license (formerly called the Enhanced Multilayer Image, or EMI) provides a richer set of enterprise-class features, including advanced hardware-based IP unicast and IP Multicast routing as well as policy-based routing (PBR). Upgrade licenses are available to upgrade a switch from the IP Base license to the IP Services license"

can you get us the show version of the switch ? You are having IP services and not advance ip services right ?
