We currently Cisco VPN client to connect to ASA 7.2 IPSec VPN, authenticating to Active Directory. I have heard things have changed with a different VPN client (AnyConnect) when upgrading to 8.x. If I upgrade to 8.x, will my current setup using the Cisco VPN Client work? Or will I be forced to change my config and use AnyConnect VPN?

The IPsec client works across all ASA versions (7.x and 8.x). ASA 8.0.2 introduced a new SSL VPN client called AnyConnect.
No worries, your relieable IPsec client will work jsut fine on ASA versions 8.x.
Take a look at the Supported VPN platforms matrix
