trunking problem

Hi seniors,,

While studying CCNA, the following question about trunking is in my mind but not clear,,,

--> Can we define two interfaces as a trunk ?

e.g in a lab there are 3 switches , sw1. sw2. sw3. Only sw1 is in distribution layer while sw2 and sw3 are in access layer. Two interfaces are connected on sw1 , one for sw2 and one for sw3. sw2 and sw3 are not connectes with eachother. sw1 is in server mode while other two are in client mode. Can we define two interfaces as a trunk on sw1 ?

Thanks in advance.

Tahir.

Hello Tahir,

Yes, you can.  If you have more then one vlan on the interface connecting sw3 to sw1 and sw2 to sw1, then you can trunk them.  So sw3 has a trunk link to sw1 and sw2 also had a trunk link to sw1.  If you are carrying only one VLAN among all switches, then all the ports can be witch ports.(no trunk need it)

Reza's explanation is good, but also remember a trunk is also between a switch and a router, if the router is used for inter-vlan routing (a "router on a stick").

Tahir,

Yes you can as the defination of trunk port/llinks says are required to pass VLAN information between switches. A port on a Cisco switch is either an access port or a trunk port. Access ports belong to a single VLAN and do not provide any identifying marks on the frames that are passed between switches. A trunk port is by default a member of all the VLANs that exist on the switch and carry traffic for all those VLANs between the switches.

To distinguish between the traffic flows, a trunk port must mark the frames with special tags as they pass between the switches. Trunking is a function that must be enabled on both sides of a link. If two switches are connected together, they must both be configured with the same tagging mechanism (ISL or 802.1Q).

Hope to help
