We have a customer that wants to be able to barge in on the calls on the 7931G phones, and I was trying to get the CBarge button to show up on the phones. I was unable to get the CBarge button to show up on the phones.

Here is a configuration similar to what our customer has:

I even double-checked to be sure that the CBarge button is configured on the 7975 phone, but it is not even showing up whenever there is a call is progress. I understand the the 7931 does not support octo lines. I have actually have hardware conferencing enabled on the UC520 unit, and I have privacy disabled on the phones. Is there any way to get the CBarge working with 7975G and 7931G phones?

I understand that CBarge uses a hardware conference bridge to perform call barging. We believe that it is possible to use a hardware conference bridge to do whisper in without having to have octo line support, as other features which use the hardware conference bridge, such as live record and conferencing, do not require octo-line support. I understand that this feature is a must have for this customer.

I understand that the Cisco 7931G phones currently do not support octo line. Are there any plans to support octo line on the 7931G phones? We actually have several different customers using the 7931G phones, and here are the features they like on these phones:

  • Ability to assign buttons for speed dials
  • Ability to configure watch buttons to see whenever other people are on the phone
  • Ability to have extra buttons for shared lines

Advantages of octo lines:

  • Multiple calls can be answered on the same button
  • Call barge and privacy features available
  • Frees up buttons for additional watch buttons, speed dials, or do not disturb button

Here are must have features for a new 793X phone model or other phone model replacing the 7931G:

  • Compatible with the UC520, UC540, and UC560 (even though requiring a software pack upgrade is acceptable)
  • Octo-line support
  • 24 or more line buttons available, including the ability to have buttons for Applications, Headset, Directories, and Messages

Besides the must have features listed above, a larger LCD screen would be useful on a new 793X phone model or other phone model replacing the 7931G. I would be willing to test a new 793X or other phone model replacing the 7931G if it had the must have features listed above.

Hi Steve,

Why the sad face :) i wasnt having a go at you LOL :D

It has been a complaint of mine since version 1.9 that CCA modifies the config without first requesting permission to do so, it is rare i will send out a system with no custom CLI config, and i can not afford for CCA to modify this config because it considers it foriegn or alien, or even not right, it should ask the controller if it should ignore it or make modifications to it, and preferrably if possible make some suggestions as to what it should be changed too.

Ephone templates are quite often modified to suit the client, they can get really fussy about how they want the buttons to display, at times i wish i could just say NO this is how they are and can not be changed

but that would be wrong of me to do so

NOTE: I did a workshop up on Cbarge wtih 4 7970 phones plugged in, and no luck in getting it to work, i cant even get it to come up on the 7931 phone either so i am going to have to narrow down on this once i can find the time to spend on shopping it up.

Cheers,

David.

Hi Dave,

I was just asking ;-(

It could be a bug.  Or I could be wrong....

We will find out.

I just read this in CCA OOB CLI Guide:

Cisco 7931G IP phones are configured by default with ephone-template 15. In CCA 2.0 and
later, all other IP phones are configured with ephone-template 16.

Hi Steve,

Is CCA being connected to this
system?

I seem to remember that any changes to the ephone-template
will get clobbered by CCA....., which is why I am asking.

It is this very statement that scares me the most about using CCA, i still cant get it around my head as to why it needs to change anyting on the config without first asking the controllers permission to make the modification.

John, if i have time too today, i will try and work shop this issue up, if i can get to the bottom of it for you i will post a guide up, i hope my work load is not too great today as i am sure you would like an answer to this problem pretty quick.

Cheers,

David.

I too am having issues getting the CBarge softkey to show up.  i am using a 7975, a SPA525G, and a 7941.  i have followed the instructions according to the CME Admin Guide (yes the latest rev) and it does not work.  Does anyone have a step-by-step guide on how config the UC500 and troubleshoot this?  this is a very basic feature that ShoreTel and other competitors offer out of the box.

I agree with you about getting the ephone template problem fixed in CCA.

Here are the possible button configurations for 7931G phones:

  • All 24 buttons available for lines or speed dials
  • 22 buttons available for lines and speed dials, plus the Menu and Headset buttons
  • 21 buttons available for lines and speed dials, plus the Menu, Headset, and Do Not Disturb buttons (with the 8.0.0 software pack or later)
  • 20 buttons available for lines and speed dials, plus the Menu, Headset, Directories, and Messages buttons (the default setting in CCA)
  • 19 buttons available for lines and speed dials, plus the Menu, Headset,  Directories, Messages, and Do Not Disturb buttons (with the 8.0.0 software pack and later)

I do know that CCA will actually read the out-of-band configuration for the button layouts supported in CME 4.2, 7.0, and 7.1, and allow buttons 21 through 24 to be configured if these buttons are actually available, but the option to configure all 5 button layouts listed above should be available in future CCA releases.

Did you actually configure the user extensions and shared line extensions on your 7970G phones as octo line extensions? These need to be configured as octo line extensions for the CBarge feature to work. Shared octo line extensions are known to work in the 7.1.3 release and can be configured if you are running a 7.1.x or 8.0.x release on your UC500 unit, even though CCA 2.2.x does not like shared octo lines. The CCA documentation also states that shared octo lines are not supported. However, this problem should really get fixed in future CCA releases.

Here is how shared octo lines are configured in CLI (until this problem is fixed in CCA):

ephone-dn  30  octo-line
no call-waiting beep
number 250 secondary 19725554000 no-reg primary
label Miller Electronics (250)
description Miller Electronics
name
Miller Electronics
preference 1 secondary 1
call-forward busy 299
call-forward noan 299 timeout 25
corlist incoming user-domestic

ephone 1

button 2:30

ephone 2

button 2:30

ephone 3

button 2:30

Here is what your ephone-template should look like for CBarge to work:

ephone-template 16
softkeys remote-in-use  CBarge Newcall
softkeys idle  Redial Newcall Cfwdall Pickup Gpickup Dnd Login
softkeys seized  Cfwdall Endcall Redial Pickup Gpickup Callback
softkeys connected  Hold Endcall Trnsfer Confrn Acct Park

The important part of the ephone-template is that CBarge is included in the softkeys remote-in-use line. You do not have to change the softkeys idle, softkeys seized, and softkeys connected lines in the ephone-template.
