Editting the /etc/hosts file in CallManager 6 7 etc

Hi, not sure if this is a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/dma/7_1_2/dmaug712.html states the following line...

"Uncheck the check box if you want to configure all hosts manually in /etc/hosts or if you have configured DHCP to provide your DNS client information."

So if you are building a cluster without DNS being configured and you have H323 gateways listed by name how do you modify the /etc/hosts file (without going though the backdoor, unless thats the only way).

In CCM4 you could just modify the hosts file and populate with all your H323 device names and bingo all was well, but the import process doesnt pull across all your lovely hosts from CCM4.

So had a look and lots of documents state the above message in the link above, but I cant find out where you do it.

Anyone know the answer?

That informat is in accurate.

On CUCM 6.x/7.x you cannot (and not supposed to) modify /etc/hosts file manually.

Though a Cisco support engineer can get into root shell and modify the file, it won't survive a reboot. On system reboot, a service called "Cluster Manager" will refresh the file with the hosts you configured in the GUI (web admin). Thus any host not in the web admin will be cleaned out.

DNS is the only solution if you want to use hostname instead of IP.
