VTP status not showing the right number of existing vlans

gautamzone

Level 1

Dear friends,

Please have a look at the following information on a 6500. I would expect that the "Number of Existing VLAN's" in show vtp status to show 12 (vlan 100, 101, 998, 999, 2242-2245,2250-2253). But it only shows 9.

The following is the output of show vlan brief and show vtp status.

Does anyone know of the reason for this difference?

1    default                          active
100  cust.sidradc.fwsmfo.01           active

Hello Gautam,

>> VTP Operating Mode              : Transparent

the switch is operating in transparent so its local vlan database can be different from what is present in VTP.

in other words you can create local vlans without seeing them advertised in VTP.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Gautam,

Your switch is confihured with vtp transperent mode and with version 1, When you set the VTP mode to transparent, then the switches do not participate in VTP. A VTP transparent switch will not advertise its VLAN configuration and does not synchronize its VLAN configuration based on received messages. VLANS can be created, changed or deleted when in transparent mode. In VTP version 2, transparent switches do forward VTP messages that they receive out their trunk ports.

So it will only show the vla which are in vtp transparent mode .

Hope to help !!
