I can crash my ESM on demand

Jmorgan1413_2

Level 1

Hello,

I have an ESM module (NME-X-23ES-1G) installed in a 2821 Router.

I seem to have it configured correctly, but I am having an interesting problem.

When I use the Web Based Device manager and click on "Port Settings" the ESM crashes.  And Burns.  It happens every time.  I have tried 2 ESM in 2 different routers (Same model and version) and it happens every time.

Her's the output I could manage to capture when it crashes:

Hi John,

Defiantly a software bug causing the box to crash when you lunch ESM.  I noticed you are running 12.2(35). This image has been out for a while.  The latest on CCO is 12.2(53). On IOS upgrade might take care of it.

Hi John,

What happens when you use the cli instead?

If you manage to login via cli can you do a "sh flash" and see if there is crash file on it?

HTH

Reza

Hey there Reza.

I can CLI it just fine.  I actually found this by accident.  I was poking around in the web interface and just clicked on the "port Settings" command and crashed the ESM.

I don't really care that the ESM crashes by doing this cause I will never probably do that in production.  It just concerns me that other things may crash the switch as well.  Like if a guy goes to ESPN.com and all of a sudden he recycles the switch.  That would be very not good.

Here's a better capture of what is going on:

Hi John,

Defiantly a software bug causing the box to crash when you lunch ESM.  I noticed you are running 12.2(35). This image has been out for a while.  The latest on CCO is 12.2(53). On IOS upgrade might take care of it.

Reza

Reza.

If you could point me to the newest software and directions on how to load it, I'll give you as many answer points as possible.

John

John,

Hehehehe

The module take a standard 3750 image.  The newest on the CCO is c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-53.SE.bin

and you know you have to have a CCO account to download it right?

Also, here is link on how to configure the etherswitch.

I did it on a couple 3845 with 16 port module

Thanks a bunch.

I do NOT have a CCO account (but, hey I'm flattered that after my obvious clulessness you entertain the possiblity that I might - LOL) but I do have a guy who does and is sending me a link to the file (any time now).

I'll let you know.

John

Hey John

Don't forget the deal ok

Did you say 5 points per reply right? !!!!!

Good Luck

Reza

Hi Reza,

I have not forgotten the deal.  I had quite an adventure applying the update to ver 53.  First of all I got the file and it turned out to be corrupt.  I got mesages that the magic number was wrong and that it was too large for memory.  I persevered and loaded it finally and it came back up (complaining the whole time) and when it finally had loaded it had wiped out the whole switch configuration.  I reloaded the config, did a wr mem and rebooted.  This time it came up with my configuration intact, but when I used IE to see if the port settings problem had been fixed I was surprised to find that the web interface had reverted to the old style that used to be on the old 2924 switched with the 11. series of IOS.  I don't know if that is correct or not, but I decided at that point to just revert to the ver 35 that shipped on the switch.  Once I did that, everything was back to normal - including the reset problem that prompted all this in the first place.

I have no doubt that it is a software issues, I just need to find a non corrupt version of the bin file so I can move forward.

I am assigning you the points.  I just need to figure out how to do that.  Thanks for all your help.

John
